The white stucco and concrete Art Deco facility is the one structure standing in this coastal city devastated by Hurricane Rita in 2006.  The building was built in 1938 using the designs of Herman J. Duncan.  The structure is located one block north of Louisiana Highway 27.  The parish withstood significant damage from the hurricane in 2006 and most of the town of Cameron was destroyed.  An Administrative Building now supplements the courthouse.   Cameron Parish was created on January 1, 1870 from parts of Calcasieu and Vermilion parishes as the 52nd parish.  Cameron has always been the parish seat.  Cameron is named after the Pennsylvania United States Senator, Simon Cameron. 

Cameron Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 8 Police Jury Members (legislative.)  One District Court Judge and Six Justice Court Judges serve Cameron Parish (judicial.) The parish is located in the far southwest corner of the state on the border with Texas.  Its entire western border is the Sabine River with Texas on the other side.  Its southern border is the Gulf of Mexico.  Numerous bayous and estuaries make up the southern part of the parish.  Lake Charles, Louisiana is due north of the parish and Beaumont, Texas is to the northwest.  The parish center is 11.7 miles East-Northeast of Cameron nearer Creole.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, and Vermilion parishes, and the Gulf of Mexico and Texas. 

The area of the parish is 1932 square miles.  It is 3 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 63 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.9 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 64 in the state.  Cameron Parish has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since it does not have any.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the parish.  It looks like a 1/3 moon facing south toward the Gulf of Mexico.  Cameron is on the south coast about a third way across the parish west to east.  Hackberry is in the northwest quarter of the parish.  Cameron is the parish seat and Hackberry is the largest populated area.  Cameron is 5.6% of the parish population while Hackberry is 16.5% of the parish population.  The parish and parish seats are pronounced KAM-E-RUN.  This parish is in the Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area.
