A Modern glass, concrete, and marble facility is half buried in a hill on a service road along United States Highways 65/84. There was an earlier courthouse in Vidalia built in 1929. Vidalia has been the parish seat since the beginning although it was originally called Concordia. Concordia Parish was one of the original parishes (3rd parish) in Louisiana when they were formed on March 31, 1807. Barron, Heinberg, and Brocato are the architects of the 1979 courthouse. The parish was named for a Spanish military post. Vidalia was named after a Spanish officer, Jose Vidal.
Concordia Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive). It has 9 Police Jury Members (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve Concordia and Catahoula parishes and Six Justice Court Judges serve Concordia Parish (judicial.) The Mississippi River is the eastern border of this parish with Mississippi across the river. The Black Bayou forms the western border. Alexandria, Louisiana lies west of the parish. The parish center is 12 miles Southwest of Vidalia nearer Monterey. The parish is surrounded clockwise by Tensas Parish and Mississippi and West Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, Avoyelles, and Catahoula parishes.
The area of the parish is 749 square miles. It is 28 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 49 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 24.9 persons per square mile making it 49 out of 64 in the state. Concordia Parish has 44.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 65 enters from the north, Tensas Parish, and exits to the east, Mississippi. United States Highway 84 comes in from Mississippi on the east and goes west into Catahoula Parish. The parish is a mesh of bending and turning waterways but the overall shape looks like a pencil. Vidalia is in the northern half of the parish on the eastern border with Mississippi. Vidalia is the parish seat and the largest city. It is 21.5% of the parish population. The parish is pronounced KON-CORE-DEE-A. The parish seat is pronounced VI-DALE-YA. This parish is in the Natchez Micropolitan Statistical Area.
