A tan brick and masonry 1938 Modern structure sits in the city center of Jonesboro. Jimmie Davis Boulevard between East and West Court Street is the location of the courthouse. The courthouse was renovated in 1966. An earlier courthouse was built in Jonesboro in 1912 after assuming the parish seat from Vernon which was the first. January 1, 1845 was when Jackson Parish was created from parts of Claiborne, Ouachita, and Union parishes as the 45th parish. J. W. Smith and Associates are the architects of the facility. The parish seat was named for American hero John Paul Jones. The parish’s namesake is United States President Andrew Jackson. Jackson Parish was the birthplace of 1 Louisiana Governor, James H. Davis.

The parish is in north central Louisiana southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana and southwest of Monroe, Louisiana. The parish center is 12 miles East of Jonesboro. The parish is surrounded clockwise by Lincoln, Ouachita, Caldwell, Winn, and Bienville parishes.

It has a density of 25.9 persons per square mile making it 48 out of 64 in the state. Jackson Parish has 38.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 167 goes north to south through the parish from Lincoln Parish to Winn Parish. The parish is a rectangle with a top notch. Jonesboro is in the southwest corner of the parish. Jonesboro is the parish seat and the largest city. It is 27.4% of the parish population. This parish is in the Ruston Micropolitan Statistical Area.
