A tan brick and masonry 1941 Art Deco courthouse is on Iowa Street at Magnolia Street.  United States Highway 190 is four blocks to the north and Louisiana State Highway 63 east of the site.  The building was enlarged in 1970.  The 1941 courthouse was replaced in 2014 with a masonry building.  Grace Hebert Architects and Labarre Architects combined on the Modern designs.  A 2010 Parish Council Building augments the new courthouse.  The parish has had courthouses in Van Buren, Springfield, Port Vincent, Centerville (Springville), and finally Livingston.  On February 10, 1832 Livingston Parish was created from Saint Helena Parish as the 32nd parish.  The entire area was originally part of Spanish West Florida.  William R. Burk was the architect of the building.  Edward Livingston; Congressman, Senator, and soldier, inspired the names for the parish and parish seat.  

Livingston Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 9 Council Members (legislative.)  Nine District Court Judges serve Livingston, Saint Helena and Tangipahoa parishes and Ten Justice Court Judges serve Livingston Parish (judicial.) The parish is in the southeast part of Louisiana just to the east of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  The parish center is 7.1 miles Southeast of Livingston nearer Frost.  The Amite River is the western border and huge Lake Pontchartrain is on the southeast corner.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Saint Helena, Tangipahoa, Saint John the Baptist, Ascension, and East Baton Rouge parishes. 

The area of the parish is 703 square miles.  It is 30 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 9 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 202.4 persons per square mile making it 9 out of 64 in the state.  Livingston Parish has 15.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 12 crosses east to west from Tangipahoa Parish to East Baton Rouge Parish.  United States Highway 190 parallels Interstate Highway 12 from Tangipahoa Parish to East Baton Rouge Parish.  A lazy L best describes the parish’s shape.  Livingston is in the northern half of the parish.  Denham Springs is on the western border of the parish.  Livingston is the parish seat and Denham Springs is the largest city.  Livingston is 1.3% of the parish population while Denham Springs is 6.6% of the parish population.  This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
