The governmental masonry Neo-Classical structure was built in 1929.  Tall columns and brass doors are featured in the facility.  The courthouse is on Tulane Avenue at Broad Street.  Interstate Highway 10 is seven blocks to the west of the location and United States Highway 61 is Tulane Avenue in front of the building.  Dibolli & Owens are the architects.  A Civil Courthouse augments the Criminal Courthouse beginning in 1955.  Earlier courthouses were in New Orleans built in 1894 and in Algiers built in 1896.  Orleans Parish was one of the original parishes (7th parish) on March 31, 1807 but has been reshaped since that time.  The French Duke Phillippe, Duc d’ Orleans, is the inspiration for the names of the parish and parish seat.   Orleans Parish was the birthplace of 4 Louisiana Governors, Jacques Dupre, Joseph M. Walker, Louis A. Wiltz, and Richard W. Leche. 

Orleans Parish government consists of a Mayor, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  Twenty-six District Court Judges and Six Parish Court Judges serve Orleans Parish (judicial.) The city/parish is on the Mississippi River in southeast Louisiana.  Lake Pontchartrain is on the north.  The parish center is in New Orleans 1.9 miles North-Northeast of the city center.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Saint Tammany, Saint Bernard, Plaquemines, and Jefferson parishes. 

The area of the parish is 350 square miles.  It is 59 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 3 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1097.1 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 64 in the state.  Orleans Parish has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 10 crosses east to west from Saint Bernard Parish to Jefferson Parish.  Other Interstate loops are around the city.  United States Highway 11 comes in from Saint Bernard Parish and terminates in the parish.  United States Highway 61 parallels Interstate Highway 10 in from Jefferson Parish and terminates in the parish.  United States Highway 90 is joined with United States Highway 11 from Saint Bernard Parish but continues onto Jefferson Parish.  The parish is shaped like a lazy arch.  New Orleans and Orleans Parish are the same.  New Orleans is the parish seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 100.0% of the parish population.  The parish and seat are pronounced ORE-LEENS.  This parish is in the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area.
