A unique red brick, towered courthouse is in the middle of the city.  An annex was added and attached to augment the space needs.  The courthouse is at Main and Court streets.  Louisiana State Highway 1 is two blocks south of site.  The Romanesque Revival courthouse was built in 1902, enlarged in 1939, and renovated in 1986.  An Annex was added in 1978.  The parish was created on March 31, 1807 (9th parish) with New Roads as the only parish seat.  The parish was originally part of the larger Pointe Coupee County.  Andrew J. Bryan & Company were the architects of the building.  New Roads was named for the establishment of a new connection between the Mississippi River and the False River.  The parish name comes from a crescent “cut off” in the Mississippi River, Point Cutoff (French Pointe Coupee).  Pointe Coupee Parish was the birthplace of 1 Louisiana Governor, Armand J. Beauvais. 

Pointe Coupee Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 8 Council Members (legislative.)  Four District Court Judges serve Pointe Coupee, Iberville, and West Baton Rouge parishes and Twelve Justice Court Judges serve Pointe Coupee Parish (judicial.) The parish is in southeast Louisiana.  Baton Rouge, Louisiana is southeast and Lafayette, Louisiana is southwest of its location.  The Mississippi River forms the eastern border and the Red River is the north border.  The parish center is 19.4 miles Northwest of New Roads nearer Fordoche.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Concordia, West Feliciana, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, Saint Martin, Saint Landry, and Avoyelles parishes. 

The area of the parish is 591 square miles.  It is 45 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 44 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 35.1 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 64 in the state.  Pointe Coupee Parish has 34.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 190 crosses the extreme southern part of the parish going east to west, West Baton Rouge Parish to Saint Landry Parish.  The overall shape is the letter L.  New Roads is in the southeast quarter of the parish.  New Roads is the parish seat and the largest city.  It is 21.9% of the parish population.  The parish is pronounced POYNT COO-PAE.  This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
