A tan brick Modern structure is the Sabine Parish courthouse built in 1957.  It is located one block south of United States Highway 171 at Capitol and Courthouse.  Many was the home of the 1916 courthouse too since Many is the only parish seat.  Sabine Parish was formed on March 27, 1843.  The parish was originally part of Caddo and Natchitoches parishes as the 42nd parish.  J. Cheshire Peyton & Associates are the facility’s architects.  Many was named for John B. Many, commander of nearby Fort Jesup.  The source for the parish’s name is the Sabine River. 

Sabine Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 9 Police Jury Members (legislative.)  One District Court Judge and Five Justice Court Judges serve Sabine Parish (judicial.) The parish is in the northwest part of the state south of Shreveport, Louisiana.  The Sabine River forms the western border with Texas.  The parish center is 4.6 miles West of Many.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by De Soto, Natchitoches, and Vernon parishes and Texas. 

The area of the parish is 1012 square miles.  It is 14 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 41 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 21.9 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 64 in the state.  Sabine Parish has 27.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 171 crosses north to south in the parish from De Soto Parish to Vernon Parish.  A three-pronged comb facing to the east is the parish shape.  Many is slightly east of center.  Many is the parish seat and the largest city.  It is 11.6% of the parish population.  The parish is pronounced SA-BENE.  The parish seat is pronounced MAN-EE.
