The Modern concrete and glass structure was built in 1976.  The courthouse is on River Road at Courthouse Lane.  River Road is Louisiana State Highway 18.  An 1826 courthouse was also located in Hahnville, the only parish seat.  The parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as an original (11th parish.)  Gimini and Meric were the architects of the building.  The county seat is named for Governor Michael Hahn.  Saint Charles Borromeo gives his name to the parish. 

Saint Charles Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 9 Council Members (legislative.)  Three District Court Judges and Seven Justice Court Judges serve Saint Charles Parish (judicial.) The parish is west of New Orleans, Louisiana on the Mississippi River.  The Mississippi River is its north border.  Other estuaries cross the parish.  The parish center is 6.3 miles Southeast of Hahnville nearer Luling.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Saint Tammany, Jefferson, Lafourche, and Saint John the Baptist parishes. 

The area of the parish is 410 square miles.  It is 54 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 20 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 128.2 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 64 in the state.  Saint Charles Parish has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 10 crosses the northern tip from Jefferson Parish, east, to Saint John the Baptist Parish, west.  United States Highway 61 parallels Interstate Highway 10 from Jefferson to Saint John the Baptist parishes.  United States Highway 90 crosses the parish east to west, Jefferson Parish to Lafourche Parish.  Hahnville is in the northwest part of the parish on the Mississippi River.  Luling is near the center of the parish.  Hahnville is the parish seat and Luling is the largest populated area.  Hahnville is 5.6% of the parish population while Luling is 26.1% of the parish population.  The parish is shaped like a U.  The seat is pronounced HON-VIL.  The largest city is pronounced LUE-LING.  This parish is in the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area.
