A masonry and concrete Modern structure was built in 1938.  The structure is located on Main at Hamberlin and Sitman.  Louisiana State Highway 10 is north of the building.  Jones, Roesle, Olschner, & Weiner provided the building designs.  Montpelier was the first parish seat until 1832 when Greensburg became the seat.  Greensburg has had two courthouses.  Saint Helena Parish was created on October 27, 1810 as the 20th parish.  It came from Spanish West Florida.  The county seat is presumably named for a settler.  Saint Helena was the founder of the Holy Church of the Sepulchre and inspired the name for the parish. 

Saint Helena Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 7 Police Jury Members (legislative.)  Nine District Court Judges serve Saint Helena, Livingston, and Tangipahoa parishes and Six Justice Court Judges serve Saint Helena Parish (judicial.) The parish is in southeastern Louisiana, northeast of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Mississippi is on the parish’s north border.  The Amite River forms the western border.  The parish center is 3.9 miles West of Greensburg.  The parish is surrounded clockwise by Mississippi and Tangipahoa, Livingston, East Baton Rouge, and East Feliciana parishes. 

The area of the parish is 409 square miles.  It is 55 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 56 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 26.7 persons per square mile making it 47 out of 64 in the state.  Saint Helena Parish has 7.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the parish.  The parish could be described as a fat J.  Greensburg is situated slightly east of center in the parish.  Greensburg is the parish seat and the largest city.  It is 5.8% of the parish population.  The parish is pronounced SAENT HEL-E-NA.  This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
