A Modern red brick structure has been built next to the old 1903 courthouse. The building is located on Prosperity Street at Ferdinand Street. Louisiana State Highway 10 is Ferdinand Street though the city. Holly & Smith designed the new 2005 courthouse. Saint Francisville has always been the parish seat. On January 1, 1824 Feliciana Parish was divided into East and West Feliciana parishes as the 29th parish. The original area was part of Spanish West Florida. A clock tower sits on top of the older structure. Felicite de Galvez, wife of the Spanish Governor is the namesake of the parish’s name. Saint Francis of Assisi is the source for the name of the parish seat. West Feliciana Parish was the birthplace of 1 Louisiana Governor, Isaac Johnson.
West Feliciana Parish government consists of a President, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive). It has 7 Police Jury Members (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve West Feliciana and East Feliciana parishes and One Justice Court Judge serves West Feliciana Parish (judicial.) The parish is in southeast Louisiana. The Mississippi River forms its western and southern borders and the State of Mississippi is on its north border. The parish center is 4.6 miles North-Northwest of Saint Francisville nearer Bains. The parish is surrounded clockwise by Mississippi and East Feliciana, West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, Avoyelles, and Concordia parishes.
The area of the parish is 426 square miles. It is 53 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 50 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 35.9 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 64 in the state. West Feliciana Parish has 10.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 61 enters from Mississippi on the north and exits into East Baton Rouge Parish on the southeast. The parish is shaped like a fan facing to the southwest. Baton Rouge is southeast and Lafayette is southwest. St. Francisville is on the southern border along the Mississippi River. Saint Francisville is the parish seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 10.1% of the parish population. The parish is pronounced WEST FE-LEE-CEE-AN-A. This parish is in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
