The basic 1967 brick courthouse serves Nantucket County.  There was a 1772 facility earlier.  The courthouse is on Broad Street at Federal Street.  Tallmann, Drake & Guy provided the designs.  The county was created on October 7, 1691 as the 9th county with Nantucket as the only county seat.  It was originally part of New York.  The county and county seat are named for the island. 

Nantucket County government consists of an administrator, a sheriff, a police chief and a clerk (executive.)  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  One District Court Judge and Two Probate/Juvenile Court Judges serve Nantucket County (judicial.)  It is in the southeast in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  The county center is in Nantucket .1 miles West of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Barnstable County and the Atlantic Ocean and Dukes County. 

The area of the county is 48 square miles.  It is 14 out of 14 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 14 in population in the state.  It has a density of 296.9 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 14 in the state.  Nantucket County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas as there are no incorporated cities.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like a boomerang.  The county and city co-exist thus Nantucket takes up all up the island.  Nantucket is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 71.3% of the county population.
