The Modern structure was built in 1961 and sits on Ludington Street between 3rd and 4th streets.  United States Highway 2 is 20 blocks to the west of the location.  G. Arntzen & Company provided the tan brick and concrete designs.  The building was enlarged in 1994.  A map of the county is attached to the front of the courthouse.  There was a classic 1882 version earlier in Escanaba.  Masonville was the first county seat until 1864 when Escanaba took over.  The county was created on March 9, 1843 from parts of Mackinac County and Native American Territory as the 66th county.  It is named for its shape as the Greek letter.  The county seat is named for the river. 

Delta County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge, Two District Court Judges, One Probate Court Judge and court clerk serve Delta County (judicial.) The county is in the southern part of the northern peninsula.  Lake Michigan forms its southern coast.  The county center is 18.4 miles North-Northeast of Escanaba nearer Rapid River.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Alger, Schoolcraft, Charlevoix, and Leelanau counties and Wisconsin and Menominee and Marquette counties. 

The area of the county is 1992 square miles.  It is 10 out of 83 in the state.  It ranks 43 out of 83 in population in the state.  It has a density of 18.5 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 83 in the state.  Delta County has 48.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 2 crosses the county east to west from Schoolcraft County to Menominee County.  United States Highway 41 travels north to southwest from Alger County to join United States Highway 2 into Menominee County.  The county has a jagged southern coast and straight-lined other borders.  Escanaba is in the southwest corner of the county.  Escanaba is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.7% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced ES-KA-NA-BA.  This county is in the Escanaba Micropolitan Statistical Area.
