A masonry Neo-Classical Revival building was built in 1926 for Genesee County. There were 1838, 1867, and 1901 versions of the courthouse all in Flint, the only county seat. The courthouse is on Saginaw Street between Court and 5^th streets. Michigan State Highway 21 is Fifth Street. Frederick D. Madison provided the designs. The building was enlarged in 2001 and 2003. There are canons on the courthouse grounds. A County Administration was built in 1969. The county was founded on March 28, 1835 from parts of Lapeer, Saginaw, and Shiawassee counties as the 37^th county. Genesee County is named for Genesee County, New York. Flint is named for the Flint River.

The area of the county is 649 square miles. It is 50 out of 83 in the state. It ranks 5 out of 83 in population in the state. It has a density of 625.9 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 83 in the state. Genesee County has 40.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 69 crosses the county east to west from Lapeer County to Shiawassee County. Interstate Highway 75 goes north to south from Saginaw County to Oakland County. United States Highway 23 enters joined with Interstate Highway 75 from Saginaw County, splits, and exits south into Livingston County. The county looks like a small letter q. Flint is located near the center of the county. Flint is the county seat and the largest city. It is 20.0% of the county population. The county is pronounced GE-NEES.

Genesee County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive). It has 9 Commissioners (legislative.) Nine Circuit Court Judges, Thirteen District Court Judges, Three Probate Court Judges and court clerk serve Genesee County (judicial.) Genesee County is in the southeast part of the southern peninsula. Detroit, Michigan is southeast and Lansing, Michigan is southwest of the county. The county center is 5.5 miles North of Flint near Beecher. The county is surrounded clockwise by Tuscola, Lapeer, Oakland, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Saginaw counties. This county is in the Flint Metropolitan Statistical Area.
