The 1939 tan brick and concrete Art Deco building followed a classic 1878 courthouse in Gladwin.  The county was established on March 2, 1831 from Native American Territory as the 27th county.  This version is on Cedar Street between Bowery and Cayuga streets.  Michigan State Highway 18 is Cedar Street in the town.  Frederick D. Madison provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 1976.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Gladwin County and City got their names from British military commander Henry Gladwin.  Gladwin City has always been the county seat. 

Gladwin County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges, One District Court Judge, and One Probate Court Judge serve Gladwin and Clare counties and a court clerk serves Gladwin County (judicial.) The county is situated in the northern part of the southern peninsula.  The county center is 11.3 miles Northeast of Gladwin.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ogemaw, Arenac, Bay, Midland, Isabella, Clare, and Roscommon counties. 

The area of the county is 516 square miles.  It is 82 out of 83 in the state.  It ranks 55 out of 83 in population in the state.  It has a density of 49.2 persons per square mile making it 42 out of 83 in the state.  Gladwin County has 16.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is mainly rectangular.  The City of Gladwin is in the western quarter of the county.  Gladwin is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 12.1% of the county population.
