The pink/red brick and stone High Victorian/Italianate courthouse was erected in 1875 and enlarged in 1908 and 1938 and renovated in 1984. It is on 10th Avenue, 9th Street, 8th Street, and 10th Street. United States Highway 41 is 10th Avenue in the town. Gordon P. Randall provided the designs. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. Menominee County was created on March 11, 1861 from Delta County as the 75th county with Menominee as the only county seat. The county name and county seat name are Native American for “wild rice eater.”
Menominee County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive). It has 9 Commissioners (legislative.) Three Circuit Court Judges serve Menominee, Dickinson, and Iron counties and One District Court Judge, One Probate Court Judge and court clerk serve Menominee County (judicial.) The county is the southern point of the northern peninsula. Lake Michigan forms its eastern border and Wisconsin is on the west. The county center is 28 miles North of Menominee nearer Daggett. The county is surrounded clockwise by Marquette and Delta counties and Wisconsin and Dickinson County.
The area of the county is 1338 square miles. It is 24 out of 83 in the state. It ranks 59 out of 83 in population in the state. It has a density of 17.6 persons per square mile making it 65 out of 83 in the state. Menominee County has 42.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 2 crosses the northern part of the county east to west from Delta County to Dickinson County. United States Highway 41 enters joined with United States Highway 2 from Delta County, splits and heads south into Wisconsin. The county is shaped like a nail. The City of Menominee is at the southern tip of the county. Menominee is the county seat and the largest city. It is 36.1% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced ME-NOM-I-NEE. This county is in the Marinette Micropolitan Statistical Area.
