A brown brick structure was built in 1955 for Missaukee County.  The courthouse is on Canal Street between Prospect and John streets.  Michigan State Highway 55 passes one block to the west.  Gordon Cornwall designed this Modern courthouse.  The building was enlarged in 1981 and again in 2002.  The 1883 courthouse was destroyed by fire.  Veterans memorials are in a park to the west of the courthouse.  The county was formed on March 4, 1840 from Mackinac County as the 54th county.  Falmouth was the county seat until 1873 when Lake City to over.  The county is named for a Native American chief.  The county seat is named for Lake Missaukee. 

Missaukee County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge and Two District Court Judges serve Missaukee and Wexford counties and Two Probate Court Judges and court clerk serve Missaukee County (judicial.) Missaukee County is in the northern part of the southern peninsula.  The county center is 4.3 miles East of Lake City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kalkaska, Crawford, Roscommon, Clare, Osceola, Wexford, and Grand Traverse counties. 

The area of the county is 574 square miles.  It is 67 out of 83 in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 83 in population in the state.  It has a density of 26.2 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 83 in the state.  Missaukee County has 9.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  Missaukee County is a rectangle.  Lake City is in the western quarter of the county.  Lake City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 5.5% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MIS-SAW-KEE.  This county is in the Cadillac Micropolitan Statistical Area.
