The old wood Classical Revival courthouse was constructed in 1888. It was replaced by this Modern wood facility on Morenci at 10th streets. Michigan State Highway 33 is Morenci Street in the town. Sidock Group, Inc., designed the new columned 2020 courthouse. The old courthouse was destroyed by fire in 2016. An Annex was built as a school in 1920 and renovated in 1995 to support the courthouse. The county was established on April 1, 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Native American Territory as the 59th county. The county name is Native American for “pebbly prairie.” The county seat is named for the wife of one of the town founders. Union Corners was the first county seat until 1882 when Mio became the seat.

The county is in the northeast part of the southern peninsula. Lansing, Michigan is south of the county. The county center is in Mio 3.1 miles North-Northwest of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Crawford, and Otsego counties.
