A Modern tan brick courthouse, built in 2007, is on Lake Street at 3rd Street. Lake Street is Interstate Highway 75 Business in the town. The previous 1964 courthouse now serves as the Administration Center. Wigen, Tincknell, Meyer & Associates are the new courthouse architects. Veteran memorials are at the old courthouse. Roscommon County was established on April 1, 1840 from Mackinac County as the 62nd county. Its name comes from County Roscommon, Ireland. The county seat is named for the county. Hall Farm was the first county seat until 1879 when Roscommon assumed the position.

One Circuit Court Judges and Two District Court Judges serve Roscommon and Ogemaw counties and Two Probate Court Judges and court clerk serve Roscommon County (judicial.) The county is in the north central part of the southern peninsula. Lansing, Michigan is south of the county. The county center is 12.8 miles South-Southwest of Roscommon nearer Houghton Lake. The county is surrounded clockwise by Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Gladwin, Clare, Missaukee, and Kalkaska counties.
The area of the county is 580 square miles. It is 58 out of 83 in the state. It ranks 60 out of 83 in population in the state. It has a density of 40.4 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 83 in the state. Roscommon County has 4.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 75 crosses north to east in the county from Crawford County to Ogemaw County. United States Highway 127 goes north to south from Crawford County to Clare County. The county is a rectangle. The City of Roscommon is on the northern border of the county. Roscommon is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 4.2% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced ROS-COMMON.
