A concrete Modern building was erected in 1953 on McMorran Street between Fort and Merchant streets. Interstate Highway 69 Business is four blocks to the south of the site. Wyeth & Harman and Smith, Hinchman & Grylls are the architects. The building was renovated and enlarged in 1982 and renovated again in 2012. A Liberty Bell sits on the grounds and the structure is on the Saint Clair River across from Canada. An Administration Center was built in 1998. There was a previous courthouse in Port Huron from 1872. Saint Clair was the first county seat until 1870 when Port Huron took over. The county was created on September 10, 1820 and named for the lake. It was taken from Macomb County as the 6th county. Port Huron is named for its function on Lake Huron.

The county is surrounded clockwise by Sanilac County and Canada and Macomb and Lapeer counties.

It has a density of 191.6 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 83 in the state. Saint Clair County has 35.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 69 originates in the county and goes west into Lapeer County. Interstate Highway 94 originates and travels south into Macomb County. The county looks like a small letter j. Port Huron is on the northeast coastline of the county. Port Huron is the county seat and the largest city. It is 18.1% of the county population. Lake Huron forms its northeast border. This county is in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
