The Modern concrete and marble structure was built in 1955.  It is on Huron Street and Main Street.  Main Street is United States Highway 23 Business in the city.  There was an 1877 classic courthouse earlier.  Ralph S. Gerganoff is the architect of the current courthouse.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There are also augmenting courthouses in Chelsea, Saline, and Ypsilanti.  Washtenaw County was established on September 10, 1822 from parts of Oakland and Wayne counties as the 10th county.  Ann Arbor has always been the county seat.  The county’s name comes from the Native American name for the Grand River.  The county seat gets its name for local settlers plus the tree groves. 

Washtenaw County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 9 Commissioners (legislative.)  Five Circuit Court Judges, Eight District Court Judges, Three Probate Court Judges and court clerk serve Washtenaw County (judicial.) The county is in the southeast part of the southern peninsula.  Detroit, Michigan is directly east of the county.  The county center is 6.2 miles West-Northwest of Ann Arbor nearer Dexter.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Livingston, Oakland, Wayne, Monroe, Lenawee, Jackson, and Ingham counties. 

The area of the county is 723 square miles.  It is 43 out of 83 in the state.  It ranks 6 out of 83 in population in the state.  It has a density of 514.9 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 83 in the state.  Washtenaw County has 45.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 crosses the county east to west from Wayne County to Jackson County.  United States Highway 12 goes east to south from Wayne County to Lenawee County.  United States Highway 23 travels north to south from Livingston County to Monroe County.  The county is a rectangle.  Ann Arbor is in the eastern third of the county.  Ann Arbor is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced WASH-TE-NA.  This county is in the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area.
