The tan brick and stone Romanesque structure was constructed in 1900 and remodeled and enlarged in 1910. It is located at Colvin and 2nd streets. United States Highway 75 goes two blocks west. J. W. Ross is the courthouse architect. The facility features a tower. An 1880 courthouse existed previously. A Law Enforcement Center was added in 1975. Marshall County was formed on February 25, 1879 from Kittson County as the 78th county. Warren (1879 & 1882) and Argyle (1881) have served as the county seat. It is named for Governor William Rainey Marshall. The county seat is named for railroad officer Charles Warren.

Twenty-two District Court Judges serve Marshall, Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau counties (judicial.) Marshall County is located in northwest Minnesota. Minneapolis, Minnesota is southeast and Grand Forks, North Dakota is west of the county. The county center is 16.2 miles North-Northeast of Warren nearer Argyle. The county is surrounded clockwise by Roseau, Beltrami, Pennington, and Polk counties and North Dakota and Kittson County.
The area of the county is 1772.2 square miles. It is 10 out of 87 in the state. It ranks 73 out of 87 in population in the state. It has a density of 5.1 persons per square mile making it 83 out of 87 in the state. Marshall County has 49.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 59 travels north to south in the county from Kittson County to Pennington County. United States Highway 75 goes north to south from Kittson County to Polk County. The county is a skinny rectangle. Warren is located on the southwest border of the county. Warren is the county seat and the largest city. It is 17.7% of the county population.
