The Modern tan brick and concrete building was built in 2011 and is on Colorado Avenue at 5th Street. Minnesota State Highway 9 is two blocks southwest of the courthouse. Klein McCarthy Architects provided the designs. There were 1884 and 1957 courthouses earlier in Morris, the only county seat. The county was formed on February 20, 1862 from parts of Pierce County, which no longer exists, and Native American Territory as the 66th county. The county is named for Civil War General Isaac Stevens. The county seat is named for railroad engineer Charles Morris.

Nine District Court Judges serve Stevens, Big Stone, Chippewa, Grant, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Meeker, Pope, Renville, Swift, Traverse, Wilkin, and Yellow Medicine counties (judicial.) Stevens County is in western Minnesota. Minneapolis, Minnesota is southeast and Fargo, North Dakota is northwest of the county. The county center is 6.4 miles South-Southwest of Morris. The county is surrounded clockwise by Grant, Douglas, Pope, Swift, Big Stone, and Traverse counties.
The area of the county is 562.1 square miles. It is 58 out of 87 in the state. It ranks 70 out of 87 in population in the state. It has a density of 17.2 persons per square mile making it 60 out of 87 in the state. Stevens County has 69.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 59 crosses the county north to south from Grant County to Swift County. The county is an overall rectangle. Morris is in the eastern third of the county. Morris is the county seat and the largest city. It is 52.8% of the county population.
