The classic Antebellum and Greek Revival courthouse was built in 1821 and sits at State Street, Wall Street, Market Street, and Pearl Street.  United States Highway 84 Business passes one block west of the courthouse.  The architect is unknown for this white brick and masonry courthouse.  The facility was remodeled in 1925 and features white columns.  The county was formed on April 2, 1799 as one of the original counties (1st county) with Natchez as the only county seat.  The county is named for United States President John Adams.  The county seat is named for the Native American tribe.  Adams County was the birthplace for 3 Mississippi Governors, Gerard C. Brandon, John I. Guion, and William A. Allain. 

Adams County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Chancery Court Judges serve Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson, and Wilkinson counties, Two District Court Judges serve Adams, Amite, Franklin, and Wilkinson counties and One County Court Judge and court clerk serve Adams County (judicial.) The county is in southwest Mississippi on the border with Louisiana.  The Mississippi River forms its western border.  Jackson, Mississippi is northeast of the county.  The county center is 8.9 miles East-Southeast of Natchez nearer Washington.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Jefferson, Franklin, and Wilkinson counties and Louisiana. 

The area of the county is 460 square miles.  It is 57 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 27 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 64.2 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 82 in the state.  Adams County has 49.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 61 passes through the county north to south from Jefferson County to Wilkinson County.  United States Highway 84 goes east to west from Franklin County to Louisiana.  United States Highway 98 enters joined with United States Highway 84 from Franklin County and terminates.  The county is shaped like the State of Alaska minus its panhandle.  Natchez is located on the northwest border of the county.  Natchez is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 49.1.% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced NA-CHEZ.  This county is in the Natchez Micropolitan Statistical Area.
