The light brown brick Classical Revival courthouse in Corinth was built in 1918 and renovated in 2003.  It is located on a square at Waldron, Franklin, Foote, and Taylor streets.  Mississippi Highway 145 passes one block west of the site.  The structure features columns.  Noah W. Overstreet designed the courthouse.  There was a classier 1880 version of the courthouse earlier in Corinth the only county seat.  The county was created on April 7, 1870 from parts of Tippah and Tishomingo counties as the 62nd county.  It is named for Governor James L. Alcorn.  The county seat is named for Corinth, Greece. 

Alcorn County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Four Chancery Court Judges serve Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo, and Union counties, Four District Court Judges serve Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, and Tishomingo counties and a court clerk serve Alcorn County (judicial.) Alcorn County is in the northeast part of the state.  Its northern border is Tennessee.  Memphis, Tennessee is northwest and Jackson, Mississippi is southwest of the county.  The county center is 5.9 miles Southwest of Corinth nearer Kossuth.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tennessee and Tishomingo, Prentiss, and Tippah counties. 

The area of the county is 400 square miles.  It is 82 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 21 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 86.9 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 82 in the state.  Alcorn County has 50.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 45 goes north to south in the county from Tennessee to Prentiss County.  United States Highway 72 travels east to west from Tishomingo County to Tippah County.  The county is a rectangle with an added point extending from the northwest corner.  Corinth is on the northern border of the county.  Corinth is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.1% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced KOR-INTH.  This county is in the Corinth Micropolitan Statistical Area.
