The Modern red brick building was constructed in 2012 to replace a basic 1939 building.  It is located on Murphee at Main streets.  Mississippi State Highway 9 is Murphee Street in the town.  Pryor and Morrow are the courthouse architects.  The county was formed on January 1, 1852 from parts of Chickasaw, Lafayette, and Yalobusha counties as the 60th county.  Pittsboro has always been the county seat.  The county is named for United States Vice President John C. Calhoun.  The county seat is presumably named for a local settler.  Calhoun County was the birthplace for 1 Mississippi Governor, Dennis H. Murphree. 

Calhoun County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Two Chancery Court Judges serve Calhoun, Benton, Lafayette, Marshall, and Tippah counties and Three District Court Judges serve Calhoun, Benton, Chickasaw, Lafayette, Marshall, Tippah, and Union counties.  The county is situated in northeast Mississippi.  Jackson, Mississippi is southwest and Memphis, Tennessee is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5 miles South of Pittsboro nearer Calhoun City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lafayette, Pontotoc, Chickasaw, Webster, Grenada, and Yalobusha counties. 

The area of the county is 587 square miles.  It is 35 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 61 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 22.6 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 82 in the state.  Calhoun County has 43.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like a train lantern.  Pittsboro is located near the center of the county.  Bruce is in the northern third of the county.  Pittsboro is the county seat and Bruce is the largest city.  Pittsboro is 1.2% of the county population while Bruce is 12.9% of the county population.
