The pleasant red brick Beaux Arts courthouse was constructed in 1911.  It is on Cox Street between Manila and Summer streets.  Mississippi State Highway 198 is one block north of the courthouse.  The courthouse was enlarged and renovated in 1975.  A Justice Court building and Youth Court building have been added recently as well as an Administration Center in 2010.  The courthouse features columns and a dome.  The county was founded on January 10, 1910 from parts of Greene and Jackson counties as the 79th county with Lucedale as the only county seat.  McCrary and Slater are the architects.  George County is named for Senator James Z. George.  The county seat is named for its founder Gregory N. Luce. 

The area of the county is 478 square miles.  It is 53 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 40 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 50.9 persons per square mile making it 29 out of 82 in the state.  George County has 11.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 98 crosses the county southeast to northwest Alabama to Greene County.  The county is a rectangle with the northwest corner missing.  Lucedale is in the northeast quarter of the county.  Lucedale is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 11.8% of the county population. 

George County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Four Chancery Court Judges and Three District Court Judges serve George, Greene, and Jackson counties.  George County is in the southeast on the border with Alabama.  Jackson, Mississippi is northwest and Mobile, Alabama is southeast of the county.  The county center is 8.8 miles Southwest of Lucedale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Greene County and Alabama and Jackson, Stone, and Perry counties.  This county is in the Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area.
