The Modern tan brick and metal building was built in 1957 at Court Street and Cedar Street.  Mississippi State Highway 1 travels two blocks east of the location.  I. G. Alexander provided the building designs.  The grounds feature a Liberty Bell replica.  The county was formed on January 23, 1844 from Washington County as the 58th county with Mayersville as the only county seat.  There was an 1871 version of the facility earlier.  The county is a Native American word meaning “deer river.”  The county seat is named for founder David Mayer. 

Issaquena County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Three Chancery Court Judges serve Issaquena, Humphreys, Sharkey, Sunflower, Warren, and Washington counties and Two District Court Judges serve Issaquena, Sharkey, and Warren counties.  The county is on the western border on the Mississippi River.  Louisiana is across the border.  The county center is 7 miles Southeast of Mayersville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Washington, Sharkey, Yazoo, and Warren counties and Louisiana. 

The area of the county is 413 square miles.  It is 73 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 82 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3.2 persons per square mile making it 82 out of 82 in the state.  Issaquena County has 32.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 61 crosses the eastern part of the county north to south from Sharkey County to Warren County.  The county looks like a chair facing east.  Mayersville is on the northwest border of the county.  Mayersville is the county and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 32.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced IS-A-KWEE-NA.
