The rock and concrete Modern facility was constructed in 1854 and remodeled in 1952, 1971 and 1991.  It is on a square at Main, Gaither, Wyghil, and Cummings streets.  Main Street is Mississippi State Highway 178.  The building features an eternal flame and Veterans Memorial.  J. J. Blythe is the building architect.  Itawamba County was created on February 9, 1836 from Monroe County as the 48th county with Fulton as the only county seat.  It is named for a Native American chief.  The county seat is named for inventor Robert Fulton. 

Itawamba County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Four Chancery Court Judges serve Itawamba, Alcorn, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo, and Union counties, Four District Court Judges serve Itawamba, Alcorn, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, and Tishomingo counties and a court clerk serves Itawamba County (judicial.) Itawamba County is in northeast Mississippi.  Alabama is on its eastern border.  The county center is in Fulton 2.6 miles East-Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tishomingo County and Alabama and Monroe, Lee, and Prentiss counties. 

The area of the county is 532 square miles.  It is 45 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 41 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 44.9 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 82 in the state.  Itawamba County has 25.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 78 crosses east to west in the county from Alabama to Lee County.  The county looks like a water glass.  Fulton is located west and south of center in the county.  Fulton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 19.0% of the county population.  The county is pronounced IT-A-WAM-BA.  This county is in the Tupelo Micropolitan Statistical Area.
