The 1906 masonry Beaux Arts courthouse in Greenwood stands on Market Street between Cotton and Fulton streets.  United States Highway 49 passes 16 blocks to the west of the site.  R. H. Hunt provided the designs for the courthouse.  The building was enlarged in 1925 and 1953 and renovated in 1974.  The structure is along the Yazoo River and features a dome and veterans’ memorials.  The county was founded on January 1, 1871 from parts of Carroll and Sunflower counties as the 69th county with Greenwood as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Native American chief, Greenwood Leflore. 

Leflore County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Three Chancery Court Judges serve LeFlore, Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie, and Tunica counties, Three District Court Judges serve LeFlore, Sunflower, and Washington counties, and One County Court Judge and a court clerk serve Leflore County (judicial.) The county is in western Mississippi.  Jackson, Mississippi is south and Memphis, Tennessee is north of the county.  The county center is 11.7 miles Northwest of Greenwood nearer Itta Bena.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tallahatchie, Grenada, Carroll, Holmes, Humphreys, and Sunflower counties. 

The area of the county is 606 square miles.  It is 35 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 26 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 53.33 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 82 in the state.  Leflore County has 56.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 49E goes north to south through the county from Tallahatchie County to Holmes County.  United States Highway 82 passes east to west from Carroll County to Sunflower County.  The county looks like a hand with the pointing finger hooked up.  Greenwood is in the eastern quarter of the county.  Greenwood is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 47.1% of the county population.  The county is pronounced LE FLUR.  This county is in the Greenwood Micropolitan Statistical Area.
