The Modern red brick and glass building erected in 1978 is located on Chickasaw Street between 1st Street and 2nd Street.  United States Highway 51 is nine blocks to the west of the site.  There was an 1894 courthouse earlier.  The building was enlarged in 1981.  The Design Collective are the architects.  A Justice Center has been added.  The county was founded on April 7, 1870 from parts of Amite, Copiah, Franklin, Lawrence, and Pike counties as the 65th county with Brookhaven as the only county seat.  The county is named for United States President Abraham Lincoln.  The county seat is named for Brookhaven, New York. 

Lincoln County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  One Chancery Court Judge serves Lincoln and Copiah counties and Two District Court Judges serve Lincoln, Pike, and Walthall counties.  The county is in the southwest part of the state.  Jackson, Mississippi is north and New Orleans, Louisiana is south of the county.  The county center is 3.3 miles South of Brookhaven.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Copiah, Lawrence, Walthall, Pike, Amite, Franklin, and Jefferson counties. 

The area of the county is 586 square miles.  It is 37 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 20 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 59.6 persons per square mile making it 26 out of 82 in the state.  Lincoln County has 33.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 55 passes north to south in the county from Copiah County to Pike County.  United States Highway 51 parallels Interstate Highway 55 from Copiah to Pike counties.  United States Highway 84 crosses east to west from Lawrence County to Franklin County.  The county looks like a very fat number 7.  Brookhaven is in the northern third of the county.  Brookhaven is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Brookhaven Micropolitan Statistical Area.
