A pleasant red brick Classical Revival facility built in 1870 is the Marshall County courthouse.  It is sited on a square at College, Memphis, Van Dorn, and Market streets.  Mississippi State Highway 4 is College Street.  Willis, Sloan, and Trigg are the building architects.  It was enlarged in 1925 and remodeled in 1967.  It features two gazebos and a dome.  The county was created on February 9, 1836 from Monroe County as the 50th county with Holly Springs as the only county seat.  It is named for United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.  The county is named for local springs that flow through local holly groves. 

Marshall County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Two Chancery Court Judges serve Marshall, Benton, Calhoun, Lafayette, and Tippah counties and Three District Court Judges serve Marshall, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Lafayette, Tippah, and Union counties.  Marshall County is on the northern border with Tennessee.  Memphis, Tennessee is directly northwest and Jackson, Mississippi is southwest of the county.  The county center is in Holly Springs 1.8 miles West-Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tennessee and Benton, Union, Lafayette, Tate, and De Soto counties. 

The area of the county is 706 square miles.  It is 17 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 23 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 47.8 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 82 in the state.  Marshall County has 25.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 72 goes east to west through the county from Benton County to Tennessee.  United States Highway 78 enters from Benton County, east, and exits to De Soto County, west.  The county’s shape resembles a cowboy boot.  Holly Springs is in the eastern third of the county.  Holly Springs is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 20.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
