A Modern tan brick and concrete structure was built in 1974.  The facility is on Summit Street west of Applegate Street.  Applegate Street is United States Highway 51 in the town.  McRee, Dardaman, and Kennington are the building designers.  It sits in a park setting.  It replaced a classic 1906 courthouse.  Montgomery County was established on January 1, 1871 from parts of Carroll and Choctaw counties as the 70th county with Winona as the only county seat.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero General Richard Montgomery.  The county seat’s name is Native American for “first born daughter.” 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Three Chancery Court Judges serve Montgomery, DeSoto, Grenada, Panola, Tate, and Yalobusha counties, Two District Court Judges serve Montgomery, Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Webster, and Winston counties and a court clerk serves Montgomery County (judicial.)  The county is in the north central part of Mississippi.  Jackson, Mississippi is southwest and Memphis, Tennessee is northwest of the county.  The county center is 8.2 miles Northeast of Winona nearer Lodi.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Grenada, Webster, Choctaw, Attala, and Carroll counties. 

The area of the county is 407 square miles.  It is 78 out of 82 in the state.  It ranks 70 out of 82 in population in the state.  It has a density of 24.1 persons per square mile making it 60 out of 82 in the state.  Montgomery County has 58.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 55 cuts the western border of the county north to south from Carroll County and back into Carroll County.  United States Highway 51 parallels Interstate Highway 55 from Grenada County to Carroll County.  United States Highway 82 goes east to west from Webster County to Carroll County.  The county resembles a chair.  Winona is in the western quarter of the county.  Winona is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 45.8% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced WEE-NOE-NA.
