The dark red brick Neo-Classical and Mediterranean courthouse was built in 1916 in Tylertown. The courthouse is on Franklinton Street at Magnolia Avenue. Franklinton Street is Mississippi State Highway 27 in the town. Xavier A. Kramer is the building designer. The courthouse was renovated in 1975. The structure features faux columns and a veterans’ memorial. Walthall County was established on January 10, 1910 from parts of Marion and Pike counties as the 80th county with Tylertown as the only county seat. A Court Building has been added. The county is named for Senator Edward C. Walthall. He is also the namesake of the county seat of Webster County. The county seat is named for settler William G. Tyler.

Two Chancery Court Judges serve Walthall, Amite, Franklin, and Pike counties, Two District Court Judges serve Walthall, Lincoln, and Pike counties and a court clerk serves Union County (judicial.) Walthall County is on the southern border with Louisiana. Jackson, Mississippi is north and New Orleans, Louisiana is south of the county. The county center is 2.3 miles East-Northeast of Tylertown. The county is surrounded clockwise by Lawrence and Marion counties and Louisiana and Pike and Lincoln counties.
The area of the county is 404 square miles. It is 81 out of 82 in the state. It ranks 59 out of 82 in population in the state. It has a density of 34.4 persons per square mile making it 50 out of 82 in the state. Walthall County has 10.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 98 crosses the county east to west from Marion County to Pike County. Walthall County is shaped like a capital letter L. Tylertown is in the southwest quarter of the county. Tylertown is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 10.8% of the county population.
