A masonry Modern facility was built in 1949.  It is located on a square at Main, 10th, Bridge, and 11th streets.  Interstate Highway 90 Business is Main Street in town.  There was a nicer 1882 facility.  J. G. Link is the building architect.  Custer County was formed on February 16, 1877 as the 11th county with Miles City as the only county seat.  The county is named for General George Custer, frontiersman.  The county seat is named for local fort commander, General Nelson A. Miles. 

Custer County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges serve Custer, Carter, Fallon, Garfield, Powder River, Rosebud, and Treasure counties and a court clerk serves Custer County (judicial.)  The county is in eastern Montana.  Billings, Montana is southwest of the county.  The Yellowstone River flows through the county.  The county center is 19 miles Southeast of Miles City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Prairie, Fallon, Carter, Powder River, Rosebud, and Garfield counties. 

The area of the county is 3783 square miles.  It is 11 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 17 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3.1 persons per square mile making it 25 out of 56 in the state.  Custer County has 70.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 crosses the county northeast to west from Prairie County to Rosebud County.  United States Highway 12 enters from the east, Fallon County, and joins Interstate Highway 94 to the west, Rosebud County.  The county could be described as a teapot.  Miles City is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Miles City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 70.5% of the county population.
