The red brick building replaced a wooden structure which burnt.  Built in 1952, it is sited on Leavitt Avenue at Attix Street.  Montana State Highway 200 is one block east of the site.  Elmer Link is this Modern building’s designer.  The building was originally a hospital.  There was an 1899 courthouse earlier.  An addition has been added.  The county was formed on
February 9, 1919 as the 44th county with Jordan as the only county seat.  The county is named for United States President James Garfield.  The county seat is named after founder, Arthur Jordan. 

Garfield County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges serve Garfield, Carter, Custer, Fallon, Powder River, Rosebud, and Treasure counties.  The county is in eastern Montana.  Great Falls, Montana is west and Billings, Montana is southwest of the county.  The Missouri River forms its northern border.  The county center is 2.4 miles North of Jordan.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Valley, McCone, Prairie, Custer, Rosebud, Petroleum, and Phillips counties. 

The area of the county is 4668 square miles.  It is 7 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 51 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.3 persons per square mile making it 56 out of 56 in the state.  Garfield County has 30.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is shaped like a cowboy boot lying on its back.  Jordan is located slightly east of the center of the county.  Jordan is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 30.1% of the county population.
