A white brick Art Deco courthouse was built in 1952.  It is located on Main Street at 1st Avenue.  United States Highway 12 is Main Street in this part of the town.  Edwin C. Osuess provided the designs.  The county was formed on November 16, 1867 as the 9th county.  There was a basic 1882 facility earlier.  Diamond City was the first county seat until 1880 when White Sulphur Springs assumed the role.  Meagher County is named for Territorial Governor Thomas F. Meagher.  The county seat is named for local mineral springs. 

Meagher County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Meagher, Golden Valley, Musselshell, and Wheatland counties.  Meagher County is in central Montana.  Great Falls, Montana is directly north of the county.  The county center is 8 miles North of White Sulphur Springs.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Cascade, Judith Basin, Wheatland, Sweet Grass, Park, Gallatin, Broadwater, and Lewis and Clark counties.  The county is shaped like a lounge chair. 

The area of the county is 2392 square miles.  It is 27 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.8 persons per square mile making it 48 out of 56 in the state.  Meagher County has 49.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 12 crosses the county east to west from Wheatland County to Broadwater County.  United States Highway 89 passes north to south from Cascade County to Park County.  White Sulphur Springs is in the southern third of the county.  White Sulphur Springs is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 49.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MEE-GER.
