The Modern metal building was constructed in 1998.  This structure replaced a wooden 1915 courthouse.  Prairie County was formed on February 15, 1915 as the 41st county with Terry as the only county seat.  The county’s name is a geographical description of the local terrain.  The county seat is named for Calvary General Alfred H. Terry.  The courthouse is sited on Park Street at Josephine Street.  Interstate Highway 94 is four blocks to the south.  Stevenson Design are the architects of the current courthouse. 

Prairie County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges serve Prairie, Dawson, McCone, Richland, and Wibaux counties.  Prairie County is in the eastern part of the state.  Billings, Montana is southwest of the county.  The Yellowstone River passes through the county.  The county center is 5.6 miles West of Terry.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dawson, Wibaux, Fallon, Custer, Garfield, and McCone counties. 

The area of the county is 1737 square miles.  It is 39 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 52 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.6 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 56 in the state.  Prairie County has 51.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 crosses the county northeast to southwest from Dawson County to Custer County.  The appearance of the county could be described as a lounge chair.  Terry is located near the center of the county.  Terry is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 51.6% of the county population.
