The classic masonry Beaux Arts structure was built in 1912 to replace a basic wooden courthouse.  It is situated on Main Street at 12th Avenue.  Interstate Highway 94 passes six blocks southwest of the site.  The courthouse designers are John G. Link and Charles S. Haire.  The county was created on February 11, 1901 as the 26th county.  Forsyth has always been the county seat.  Rosebud County is named for Rosebud Creek.  The county seat is named for Calvary General John W. Forsyth. 

Rosebud County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges serve Rosebud, Carter, Custer, Fallon, Garfield, Powder River, and Treasure counties.  The county is in eastern Montana.  The Yellowstone River flows through the county.  Billings, Montana is west of the county.  The county center is 18.1 miles Southwest of Forsyth.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Garfield, Custer, Powder River, Big Horn, Treasure, Yellowstone, Musselshell, and Petroleum counties. 

The area of the county is 5012 square miles.  It is 4 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 27 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.7 persons per square mile making it 39 out of 56 in the state.  Rosebud County has 45.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 crosses east to west in the county from Custer County to Treasure County.  United States Highway 12 enters joined with Interstate Highway 94 from Custer County, splits and exits northwest into Musselshell County.  United States Highway 212 crosses the southern tip from Powder River County, east, to Big Horn County, west.  The county is a number 7.  Forsyth is in the northern third of the county.  Colstrip is in the southern third of the county.  Forsyth is the county seat and Colstrip is the largest city.  Forsyth is 19.8% of the county population while Colstrip is 25.2% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced COEL-STRIP.
