The Art Deco 1936 masonry courthouse sits at the corner of Laurel and Main streets.  Montana State Highway 5 is four blocks southwest of the courthouse.  Edwin G. Osness and John G. Link are the architects.  The building was remodeled in 1973 and enlarged in 1983.  Sheridan County was established on March 11, 1913 as the 34th county.  There was a basic wooden courthouse earlier in Plentywood, the only county seat.  The county is named for Civil War General Phillip H. Sheridan.  The county seat describes the local area. 

Sheridan County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Sheridan, Daniels, and Roosevelt counties.  The county is in the northeast corner of the state bordering both Canada and North Dakota.  Billings, Montana is southwest of the county.  The county is a rectangle with the southwest corner eaten away.  Plentywood is in the northern third of the county.  Plentywood is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 47.1% of the county population.  The county center is 9.6 miles Southeast of Plentywood.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and North Dakota, and Roosevelt and Daniels counties. 

The area of the county is 1677 square miles.  It is 41 out of 56 in the state.  It ranks 40 out of 56 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.1 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 56 in the state.  Sheridan County has 61.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.
