A Modern tan brick building is the 1953 courthouse in Wibaux. It is located on Wibaux Street at 1st Avenue Southwest. Montana State Highway 7 is Wibaux Street. F. I. Byerly is the building architect. The county was founded on August 17, 1914 as the 39th county with Wibaux as the only county seat. The county and county seat are named for cattleman, Pierre Wibaux.
Wibaux County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve Wibaux, Dawson, McCone, Prairie, and Richland counties and a court clerk serves Wibaux County (judicial.) The county is located on the eastern border with North Dakota. Billings, Montana is southwest of the county. The county center is 1.3 miles South-Southwest of Wibaux. The county is surrounded clockwise by Richland County and North Dakota and Fallon, Prairie, and Dawson counties.
The area of the county is 889 square miles. It is 54 out of 56 in the state. It ranks 53 out of 56 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.1 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 56 in the state. Wibaux County has 49.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 94 passes east to west through the county from North Dakota to Dawson County. The county looks like a head with its mouth open. The City of Wibaux is in the eastern third of the county. Wibaux is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 49.3% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced WEE-BOE.
