The 1954 Modern tan brick building is the current courthouse. There was a classic 1905 courthouse earlier also in Billings, the only county seat. Yellowstone County was created on December 26, 1883 as the 13th county. It is named for the Yellowstone River. Billings is named for railroad officer Frederick H. Billings. The courthouse is sited on 27th Street at 2nd Avenue. United States Highway 312 passes one block south of the site. Chandler C. Cohagen is the building architect.

United States Highway 87 comes from the north, Musselshell County, joins Interstate Highway 90 into Big Horn County. United States Highway 212 enters joined with Interstate Highway 90 from Big Horn County, splits and exits southwest into Carbon County. United States Highway 310 originates and joins United States Highway 212 into Carbon County. The county looks like a sea horse. Billings is located in the southwest part of the state. Billings is the county seat and the largest city. It is 71.1% of the county population. This county is in the Billings Metropolitan Statistical Area.
