The tan brick and concrete Modern building was erected in 1957. The facility is on State Street between Illinois and Pennsylvania streets. Nebraska State Highway Spur 4A is State Street is this small community. Robert W. Ditzen provided the building designs. There was an 1890 wooden courthouse before this one also in Harrisburg, the only county seat. The county was formed on January 1, 1888 from Cheyenne County as the 82nd county. The county’s name was settlers attempt to lure more settlers into the “banner county of Nebraska.” Harrisburg was named for Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Four District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan and Sioux counties (judicial.) Banner County is on the western border with Wyoming. Scottsbluff, Nebraska is directly north and Cheyenne, Wyoming is southwest of the county. The county center is 10.1 miles Southeast of Harrisburg. The county is surrounded clockwise by Scotts Bluff, Morrill, Cheyenne, and Kimball counties and Wyoming.
