The classic red brick and stone Romanesque Revival courthouse was constructed in 1891.  It is located on Main Street at 4th Street.  United States Highway 34 Business is Main Street in this part of the town.  William M. Gray is the architect.  The structure features towers and a working clock.  A military gun and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  A Law Enforcement Center is next door.  Cass County was organized on January 1, 1855 as the 8th county.  Plattsmouth has always been the county seat.  The county is named for War of 1812 hero General Lewis Cass.  The county seat is a geographical description of its location on the mouth of the Platte River.  Cass County was the birthplace for 2 Nebraska Governors, George L. Sheldon and Robert L. Cochran. 

Cass County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges and Three County Court Judges serve Cass, Otoe and Sarpy counties (judicial.)  The county is on the eastern border with Iowa.  Lincoln, Nebraska is directly west of the county.  The Missouri River forms its eastern border with Iowa.  The county center is 22.9 miles Southwest of Plattsmouth nearer Weeping Water.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Sarpy County and Iowa and Otoe, Lancaster, and Saunders counties. 

The area of the county is 559 square miles.  It is 67 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 47.6 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 93 in the state.  Cass County has 50.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 cuts the northwest corner of the county from Sarpy County is Lancaster County.  United States Highway 6 parallels Interstate Highway 80 from Sarpy to Lancaster counties.  United States Highway 34 goes east to west from Iowa to Lancaster County.  United States Highway 75 travels north to south from Sarpy County to Otoe County.  The county looks like a wave rolling to shore eastward.  Plattsmouth is in the northeast corner of the county.  Plattsmouth is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 24.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
