A Modern concrete and masonry building built in 1954 sits at Lincoln, Court, Colfax, and Church streets.  Lincoln Street is United States Highway 275 in the town.  B. H. Backlund and Associates are the architects.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was an 1872 courthouse previously also in West Point, the only county seat.  The county was organized on January 1, 1855 from Burt County as the 10^th county.  It is named for Territorial Governor Thomas B. Cuming.  West Point is a geographical description of its location in the river valley. 

Cuming County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Two District Court Judges and Three County Court Judges serve Cuming, Antelope, Knox, Madison, Pierce, Stanton and Wayne counties.  The northeast part of Nebraska is the location of the county.  Omaha, Nebraska is southeast and Sioux City, Iowa is northeast of the county.  The county center is 11.1 miles Northwest of West Point nearer Beemer.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Thurston, Burt, Dodge, Colfax, Stanton, and Wayne counties. 

The area of the county is 572 square miles.  It is 58 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 30 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 15.8 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 93 in the state.  Cuming County has 64.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 275 passes northwest to south in the county from Stanton County to Dodge County.  The county is a rectangle.  West Point is in the southeast quarter of the county.  West Point is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 38.9% of the county population.
