The masonry Neo-Classical building was built in 1917.  The facility is on Park Street between 4th and 5th streets.  United States Highway 77 passes one block west of the site.  A. H. Dyer was the architect.  A Justice Center sits next door and veteran memorials are on the courthouse grounds.  There was a classier 1888 courthouse earlier in Fremont  Fontenelle was the first seat until 1860 when Fremont assumed the county seat.  The Justice Center was added in 1986.  The county was created on January 1, 1855 as the 11th county.  It is named for United States Senator Augustus Caesar Dodge.  Fremont is named after explorer John C. Fremont. 

Dodge County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges and Four County Court Judges serve Dodge, Burt, Cedar, Dakota, Dixon, Thurston and Washington counties.  The county is in eastern Nebraska.  The Platte River forms its southern border.  Omaha, Nebraska is southeast and Lincoln, Nebraska is south of the county.  The county center is 21 miles Northwest of Fremont nearer Scribner.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Cuming, Burt, Washington, Douglas, Saunders, Butler, and Colfax counties. 

The area of the county is 534 square miles.  It is 74 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 6 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 69.6 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 93 in the state.  Dodge County has 85.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 30 passes east to west in the county from Washington County to Colfax County.  United States Highway 275 goes north to southeast from Cuming County to Douglas County.  The county looks like a cowboy boot.  Fremont is in the southeast corner of the county.  Fremont is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 73.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Fremont Micropolitan Statistical Area.
