The outstanding red brick and stone courthouse, built in 1893, is located on the city square surrounded by G, 8th, F, and 10th streets.  Nebraska State Highway 41 is F Street in the town.  George E. McDonald was the architect of this Richardsonian Romanesque structure.  The building features a tower with a working clock.  The grounds have veteran memorials and a working fountain.  The county was founded on January 26, 1856 as the 21st county from parts of Jackson County, which no longer exists, and Native American Territory.  Geneva has always been the county seat.  The county’s namesake is United States President Millard Fillmore.  Geneva is named for either Geneva, Illinois or Geneva, New York. 

The area of the county is 576 square miles.  It is 45 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 50 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.6 persons per square mile making it 45 out of 93 in the state.  Fillmore County has 73.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 6 crosses the county from east to west from Saline County to Clay County.  United States Highway 81 goes north to south from York County to Thayer County.  The county is a rectangle.  Geneva is located near the center of the county.  Geneva is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 38.4% of the county population. 

Fillmore County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Three District Court Judges serve Fillmore, Clay, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Nuckolls, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline and Thayer counties and Three County Court Judges serve Fillmore, Adams, Clay, Franklin, Harlan, Kearney, Nuckolls, Phelps, and Webster counties.  Fillmore County is in southern Nebraska.  Grand Island is northwest and Lincoln is northeast of the county.  The county center is 7.7 miles Southeast of Geneva nearer Strang.  The county is surrounded clockwise by York, Seward, Saline, Jefferson, Thayer, Nuckolls, Clay and Hamilton counties.
