The white wooden building was erected in 1889 and is located on Wellington Street at Nebraska Street.  Nebraska State Highway 18 is one block north of the courthouse.  The Federalist building designer was Sebastian Binger.  There are veteran memorials on the grounds.  The county was established on January 1, 1872 from Native American Territory as the 55th county.  There was an 1883 courthouse also in Stockville, the only county seat.  Frontier County is a geographical name for its location on the frontier.  The county seat is named for the local cattle industry.  Frontier County was the birthplace for 1 Nebraska Governor, Ralph G. Brooks. 

Frontier County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Frontier, Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties.  The county is in southwest Nebraska.  Grand Island, Nebraska is northeast and Scottsbluff, Nebraska is northwest of the county.  The county center is 4.5 miles North-Northeast of Stockville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lincoln, Dawson, Gosper, Furnas, Red Willow, Hitchcock, and Hayes counties. 

The area of the county is 975 square miles.  It is 17 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 72 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2.6 persons per square mile making it 74 out of 93 in the state.  Frontier County has 59.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 83 travels north to south in the county from Lincoln County to Red Willow County.  The county looks like a mirror image of the State of Nebraska.  Stockville is near the center of the county.  Curtis is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Stockville is the county seat and Curtis is the largest city.  Stockville is 0.8% of the county population while Curtis is 32.2% of the county population.
