The 1912 red brick facility is on 1st, Cleveland, Railroad, and Blaine streets.  Nebraska State Highway 2 is four blocks south of the facility.  Oscar R. Kirschke provided the County Citadel designs.  A Liberty Bell replica sits in front.  The county was created on January 1, 1889 from Native American Territory as the 87th county.  Mullen has always been the county seat.  Hooker County is named for Civil War General Joseph Hooker.  The county seat is named for a railroad contractor.  An 1889 wooden courthouse was also in Mullen, the only county seat. 

Hooker County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Five County Court Judges serve Hooker, Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties.  Hooker County is in western Nebraska.  Scottsbluff, Nebraska is west and Grand Island, Nebraska is southeast of the county.  The county center is 8.5 miles South of Mullen.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Cherry, Thomas, McPherson, Arthur, and Grant counties. 

The area of the county is 721 square miles.  It is 33 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 86 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.0 persons per square mile making it 85 out of 93 in the state.  Hooker County has 70.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is a rectangle.  Mullen is located near the northern border of the county.  Mullen is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 70.2% of the county population.
