The 1928 masonry Classical Revival courthouse replaced an 1893 basic structure.  E. L. Goldsmith and Company were the architects.  The county was organized on January 1, 1888 from Cheyenne County as the 83rd county with Kimball as the only county seat.  The facility is located on 3rd and Walnut streets.  Third Street is United States Highway 30 in the town.  The facility features columns and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county and county seat are named for railroad official Thomas L. Kimball.  

Kimball County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Kimball, Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan and Sioux counties.  The county is situated in the southwest corner of the panhandle.  Scottsbluff, Nebraska is north and Cheyenne, Wyoming is west of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles South-Southwest of Kimball.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Banner and Cheyenne counties and Colorado and Wyoming. 

The area of the county is 952 square miles.  It is 19 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 62 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3.6 persons per square mile making it 69 out of 93 in the state.  Kimball County has 75.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 crosses the county east to west from Cheyenne County to Wyoming.  United States Highway 30 parallels Interstate Highway 80 from Cheyenne County to Wyoming.  The highest point in Nebraska, Panorama Point, is in the county.  The county is an overall rectangle.  The City of Kimball is located slightly east and north in the county.  Kimball is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 66.6% of the county population.
