The Modern brown brick and concrete building was constructed in 1962.  The courthouse is on Main Street at 4th Street.  Nebraska State Highway 92 is one block north of the site.  Robert L. Murphy is the designer.  Gandy had an 1887 courthouse and Stapleton had a 1912 courthouse earlier.  Logan County was formed on February 19, 1885 from Native American Territory as the 76th county.  It is named for Civil War General John A. Logan.  The county seat is named for a settler. 

Logan County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Three District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Logan, Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties (judicial.)  Logan County is in the central part of the state.  Grand Island, Nebraska is southeast and Scottsbluff, Nebraska is west of the county.  The county center is 3 miles Northeast of Stapleton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Thomas, Blaine, Custer, Lincoln, and McPherson counties. 

The area of the county is 571 square miles.  It is 59 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 85 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.3 persons per square mile making it 79 out of 93 in the state.  Logan County has 42.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 83 passes north to south in the county from Thomas County to Lincoln County.  The county is a rectangle.  Stapleton is in the southern quarter of the county.  Stapleton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 37.5% of the county population.  This county is in the North Platte Micropolitan Statistical Area.
